“Love never dies, it’s always there, somewhere,” declares Deepika Padukone in the opening moments of Finding Fanny’s trailer. Before you start wondering if the director is reeling under a very prolonged Dil To Pagal Hai hangover, the film quickly veers into familiar Homi Adajania territory. No, fear not, this is not another Cocktail. Before Adajania botched up his filmography with that hit film, he made the intriguing and engaging Being Cyrus. Anyone who saw Being Cyrus will see the traces of that first film all over the trailer of Finding Fanny.
With Finding Fanny, Adajania is back in familiar territory – dark humour, quirky characters in various shades of crazy, and a quest. This time, Dimple Kapadia, Deepika Padukone, Pankaj Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and Arjun Kapoor set off to find Stephanie Fernandes, the love of Shah’s life.
However, to ensure Finding Fanny doesn’t remind you of a regular Bollywood road trip (we’re looking at you, Zoya and Farhan Akhtar), Adajania’s characters are pretty and doing unexpected things.
Like hacking a chicken (Padukone), shaking at a dirty jar full of dentures (Arjun Kapoor) and sizing up a voluptuous posterior (Pankaj Kapoor). Being skilled in the art of decoding Bollywood symbols, we’ve figured out that Finding Fanny is about a badass girl; a troubled, aggressive boy; a boisterous, middle aged woman and a lovable lech. If these two sets don’t end up as couples, we’ll give up eating chickens. The cutest part of the trailer, however, is Shah as a crazy old uncle.
The film is set in Goa and the background score is catchy – very un-Cocktail, hallelujah.
